Podcast, VidCast... I wanna be a geek too!

What is a Podcast? It's really just a fancy name for an MP3 recorded by a syndicator (otherwise known as a show producer) that simply has something they want to say and preferably an audience to which they want to say it. In other words its a radio talk show (usually) that is saved in a file and then pushed out to people who subscribe to it. (Technically those people check an index published by the publisher and if there are new files they grab [or pull] the file for later listening).

The name Podcast comes from the most popular portable music player on the markey, Apple's iPod, however the term is not specific to any one portable music player or even having a music player in the first place. It should be something more generic like, 'Syndicated Talk Show MP3 Download.' Some of the shows that are published are actually music in format, but the large majority are special interest talk.

The power of this format is amazing because it empowers a much larger group of people with ideas and information to share to convert to contributers. It allows for a much more open floor for discussing politics, technology, science, and more.

What is a VidCast? A VidCast or Video Podcast is identical to a Podcast except that the file being delivered is a video instead of an MP3. Some are in H.264, MPEG4, or Quicktime format... The formats are nothing more than quality and size differences and certain portable players that support video only support a subset of the different formats so you want to grab a video in the format your player can play (if the goal is to watch it on your computer like I do, simply having the codec installed is all it takes... most videos are distributed in formats that your computer should already support)

Audio Podcasts that I highly suggest as they are all produced quite professionally:
